Welcome to my Substack!
First big question: Why bother?
Howdy all, and welcome to my Substack!
The game here is simple: I write about the things I’ve been thinking about — things that aren’t quite “big” or fleshed-out enough for a full-blown essay. Will it be interesting? I really don’t know. A literary writer stakes everything on the arrogant notion that their ideas and imaginings are worthy of other people’s attention. By creating this account, and by writing at all, I’m ascribing such value to my words. It’s up to you all, I suppose, to decide whether or not I’m full of it.
What topics will I cover? I don’t know. This is a road trip with no destination, where just the first few stops are planned. I imagine there will be a fair bit about art and literature, and probably the occasional post on the craft of writing.
Basically, we’ll be exploring what it means to be human. Yeah, the big stuff. Again, arrogant. I know, and I’m sorry.
But hey — I’ve spent my whole life reading, and I’m eternally grateful that my literary heroes picked up the pen. Thank God they didn’t shy away from writing in all its arrogance.
For the literary world to go ‘round, we need writers. Here, I proclaim myself to be among them. Now, let’s eff around and discover to what extent it’s all worth it.
Thank you for subscribing. I’ll be aiming to publish at least once a week. First “real” post coming soon.
P.S. If you’ve received this against your wishes, I apologize. I’m unsure of the etiquette around adding email addresses to mailing lists like this. By all means, unsubscribe if you’d like. I will not be offended. I promise.
